We live in a world of instant gratification and quick fixes. The more results we can see in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of effort tends to be the path that most people take. But how many times do we take this path only to be disappointed? It must be quite often based upon the thousands of products hitting the market every year that make promises like “lose 30 lbs in a week” or “get that body you have always dreamed of” or “this is the only pill you will ever have to take”. If these claims were true then there wouldn’t be the need for all the new diet plans, health shakes and quick-fix pills, right?
How about, instead of looking at the newest diet fad, look to your produce department. These miracle working foods have been around for thousands of years and actually DO have everything you need for a healthy body. One of my favorites is the apple. Everyone has heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. But is this just a saying, or is there some truth behind the words? In fact there is some truth. Check this out: Apples contain flavanoids and phytonutrients that studies have shown may help with the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Apples contain a high content of antioxidant properties which reduce cell damage and can help prevent heart disease. Apples are fat, sodium, and cholesterol free and are a good source of fiber which aids the digestive system. They are also a decent source of vitamin c which boosts the immune system. And if that weren’t enough…Apples are low in calories. A medium sized apple is only about 80 calories.
All in all there are many reasons to enjoy apples on a daily basis and there are thousands to choose from. Yes, thousands! By the fall harvest there are over 7,500 named varieties worldwide. There are actually 2,500 varieties of apples grown here in the United States but only about 100 of those are grown commercially. Most people have their favorites; Cortland, Gala, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, Fuji, Rome, Cameo, Jonathan and my personal favorite Granny Smith just to name a few.
So, for a different kind of instant gratification just toss an apple in your lunch bag, briefcase or purse and not only will you keep the doctor away but you'll get a tasty snack as well!
